Gamification in recycling?

Unfortunately, for many people, recycling can seem like a bit of a chore and can be unmotivating to do so, and some people can be lazy too. In this instance, we can use a technique called “Gamification”.

What is Gamification?

Gamification is a strategy used to implement elements of ‘gaming’ (competition, point scoring, rules of play etc.) to motivate people to achieve their goals. Typically, it is used as an online marketing technique to encourage engagement in a product, service or idea.

How can we use gamification in recycling?

By creating a project that allows the user to be rewarded for recycling. Ideally, there would be a recycling bin with an arduino attached gumball machine to dispense (gumballs) when a piece of rubbish is thrown inside. There is a motion sensor inside the bottom of the bin which senses when something is put in.

We are not sure on how we could provide money as an incentive for this project. Maybe it could work out if the councils were in-charge. If food would be the reward for recycling something, we may have to provide something easily disposable and fairly affordable, and we should be able to provide an abundant quantity. (snacks, gumballs, candy or of the sort etc.)
